Kensington is a community in Calgary, Alberta, that is very popular among YYC residents. The trendy spot is located downtown and has so much to offer. There are over 270 businesses that exclude chain stores but include some excellent coffee shops, restaurants, and cool locally-owned spots. Calgary’s atmosphere is hugely entrepreneurial, so it’s so easy to support local businesses. There are several newly-developed condos and townhomes in the community. The most notable are John’s on 10th, Lido, Kensington By Bucci, Pixel, VEN, and Theodore. There are also plenty of character homes, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of these homes need some work, but they’re typically much more affordable than newly built homes that can run you into the millions. 

Theodore Calgary

While Kensington is considered part of downtown, it’s a bit removed, as it’s located just over the bridge that takes traffic over the Bow River. Residents of Kensington can walk along Memorial Drive, along the river, and take in some of the best scenery that Calgary has to offer. They are also close to the Peace Bridge, which is quintessentially Calgarian. With all the natural beauty surrounding Kensington, it’s no surprise that plenty of Green and eco-friendly practices are being adopted everywhere in the community. 

The community has always been known for being eclectic and welcoming while offering a charming experience. Many students who attend the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the Alberta College for Art and Design (ACAD) choose Kensington to be their home due to the proximity to the campuses.

Living In Kensington

Living in Kensington Village provides a lifestyle that many Calgary residents are after. It’s great for outdoor enthusiasts who love to exercise outside during the warmer months. Not to mention, Banff and Lake Louise are only an hour and a half away, so the mountains are close if you’re okay with encountering tourists galore. Kensington includes plenty of luxury with a mix of indie. There’s plenty of things to do in Kensington Village, regardless of your lifestyle. However, you have to love living in the downtown section of the city to enjoy your time in Kensington, because you’re really in the heart of all the action. While you won’t hear people clubbing or being obnoxious, there are plenty of neighbourhood pubs, touristy spots, and restaurants open late. It’s a subdued downtown community compared to others of the same nature. 

You can find it all in Kensington. High-end dining experiences, luxury shopping, thrift stores, ice cream shops, plenty of places to grab a coffee, Crave Cupcakes and more. The mix of local businesses is part of what makes Kensington so special. 

Cafe

If you’re the type of person to get bored easily, you’ll be thrilled with the number of events and things to do in Kensington Village regularly. SAIT often hosts events, and the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium is nearby. You can attend an intimate concert, comedy show, Ballet, and many other kinds of shows. The University of Calgary is a 10-minute train ride away, and there are often concerts held at MacEwan Hall. 

Kensington hosts “Spend a Day in Kensington’s Diagon Alley,” where Harry Potter fans can visit local businesses for HP-themed treats and events in the summer. While it’s busy and the streets are blocked off to vehicle traffic, it can be quite busy! Some Calgary companies offer food tours, where you can visit some of the best restaurants in the city, many of them being in Kensington. You can also find the International Film Festival, the Sun and Salsa Festival, and Foodie Festival. All in all, Kensington residents know how to have fun.
